Measles 2025
The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS) has reported a confirmed
measles case in a child visiting Taney County, linked to recent international travel. The child’s
vaccination status is unverified, but exposure is believed limited, with known contacts
identified. This marks Missouri’s first measles case of the year.
Measles is a highly contagious viral disease that starts with fever, cough, and other symptoms
appearing 7-14 days after exposure. It can lead to severe health issues, including pneumonia
and encephalitis. The virus spreads through respiratory droplets and can remain infectious in
the air for up to 2 hours.
Individuals suspecting measles should isolate and contact their healthcare provider before
visiting. The best preventive measure is vaccination with two doses of the
MMR(Measles/Mumps/Rubella) vaccine, which offers 97% protection. The ACIP/CDC
Guidelines for Children recommend an MMR vaccine at 12-15 months and again at 4-6 years
of age. Adults not at high risk of exposure are recommended to have at least 1 documented
dose of MMR in their lifetime, or other evidence of immunity (e.g., positive measles
immunoglobulin G (IgG)). Adults at high risk for exposure, including students at postsecondary institutions, healthcare workers, and international travelers, should have two
documented doses. It is recommended that pregnant women should wait to get their MMR
vaccine until after they’ve given birth and avoid getting pregnant for four weeks after getting
the MMR vaccine.
Individuals in need of blood tests for MMR titers (markers) to assess their immunity can have
this performed at the Health Department. To schedule an appointment, they should call 417-
745-2138 and ensure their primary care physician sends a doctor’s order to the Health
Department authorizing the blood draw. Currently, the Health Department does not offer the
MMR vaccine for adults, though it is available for eligible children through the Vaccines for
Children program. Appointments are required for this service as well. Walgreens and Walmart
pharmacies both offer the MMR vaccine for adults. It is recommended that individuals
contact their health insurance carrier to determine coverage.
